“THEY were fast, efficient and thorough and we are truly grateful for the work Norkem Park SAPS did in bringing the suspects to book.”
These were the words of a very relieved Birch Acres resident, after thieves nearly got away with her car in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“My husband woke me up and said someone was trying to steal the car. I looked out the window and saw my car being reversed towards the gate. It was 3am,” the Birch Acres resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said.
The 31-year-old’s white VW Polo Vivo was almost stolen from their house on Kwartel Street but the suspects could not get out of the gate.
“The suspects managed to disarm the alarm system, break into the car, take out the computer box and replace it with another one and tamper with the ignition with a screw driver in order to try and start the car.
“Once the car was running, they went to the electric gate to try and break the motor but they only managed to push the gate half open.

“As they were reversing, my husband woke up and woke my brother-in-law and I. He tried closing the gate during the incident but it was malfunctioning and was going back and forth,” explained the resident.
My husband tried closing the gate during the incident but it was malfunctioning and was going back and forth,” she said.
“With the gate half-way open and the steering wheel locked, the suspects couldn’t turn the car and reversed right into the gate. My husband ran towards the vehicle with a brick and the one suspect jumped out of the car and made a run for it. The other suspect was standing outside the yard.
“Credit should be given where credit is due, and in this instance Norkem Park SAPS deserve a big round of applause,” she said.
“As the suspects made a run for it, my brother-in-law and I ran to the street. That’s when we saw a police van with blue lights heading towards us. We told the officer (at the time we did not know it was Const Tokollo Molaiwa) what had just transpired. He made a U-turn and sped off.”
Molaiwa was patrolling in the area during the time of the attempted theft and managed to chase the suspects, along with other SAPS members, including Const Nare Ngwepe and Const Kwena Nkoe.
The two suspects, aged 23 and 39, were cornered on Zuurfontein Road and brought to book.
“We would like to especially thank Const Molaiwa for a sterling job,” the resident said.
