Zama is flipping out

A Tembisa lad is waiting to be named a world recorder holder.

A Tembisa acrobat is enthusiastically waiting for Guinness World Records to name him a world record holder for the most consecutive backflips with one hand.

Zama Mofokeng said he is very excited that he finally put together everything required by Guinness Book of Records.

On March 4, Zama attempted to break a previously established world record of 24 consecutive backflips with one hand.

Zama exceeded the set record with 10 more backflips, bringing his total to 34 backflips with one hand.

The Tembisan previously reported that at the age of 13, Zama fractured his left hand and could no longer do acrobatics.

He said his friends would laugh at him but that was not for long as the daredevil was resolute to be the best at all times.

“I told myself I have my other hand, which is not injured, and that means I am still able to do the sport. I had no idea that my attempt to flip with one hand would set me apart from my peers,” Zama said at the time.

He said a video and a set of photos were required for his attempt to be recognised.

Residents gave Zama different videos and pictures of his world record attempt where he performed 34 back flips with one hand.

He said he never made a formal request but out of the goodness of their hearts, the community took the photos and videos.

“I want to thank everyone for their support. Tembisa people were helpful and they gave full support.

“I will be thrilled the day I hold the certificate in my hand proving that I broke a world record,” said Zama.

He said his success will put Tembisa on the map and create awareness that the township needs a training centre for acrobatics.

“I want young people to know that whatever they want to do in life is possible,” said Zama, who is also epileptic.

“I have epilepsy but I did not let the condition limit my dreams. I did not make that my weak point. I dared to be the best at what I do.”

Zama said it can take up to 12 weeks to get a response from Guinness World Records.
