Dad (36) fights for his life after serious motorcycle accident

Rudi is currently on life support in ICU and fighting for his life

THE family of a Springs father, who is on life-support after suffering multiple injuries in a motorcycle accident in Kempton Park, was dealt another blow – their medical aid funds had run out.

Rudi Seyffert (36) was on his way to drop off his work colleague, Gerhard Oosthuizen (38) in Brakpan after work at around 4.30pm, when a silver Volkswagen Polo hit his motorcycle at the intersection of CR Swart Drive and Zuurfontein Road on April 18. Seyffert suffered severe internal injuries and Oosthuizen suffered an injury to his right knee. The car sped off.

“At the time Rudi didn’t know how seriously injured he was and tried to stop traffic to get help but no one came to his assistance,” said family spokesperson, Louwrette Wiese.

After a while someone stopped and called ER24 and within minutes emergency personnel was on the scene.

On assessment Seyffert was airlifted to Sandton Mediclinic where he is still on life-support in ICU. Oosthuizen was taken to Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital where his knee was operated. He is in a stable condition.

“Rudi’s lungs took most of the impact. The left one is bleeding and they have put him on life-support to help him breathe. He is not strong enough to breathe on his own and they are worried his lungs may collapse,” said Wiese.

His oxygen level is 65 per cent at the moment and his own breathing is only 35 per cent strong.

Some of his ribs are also broken and they fixed four ruptures in his liver that were bleeding. They have also drained 500ml of blood out of his stomach and had to remove 20cm of his small intestine that was protruding through a hernia that was caused by the accident.

His pancreas has a rupture and his blood pressure keeps fluctuating from 180/94 and higher.

“Rudi is a very strong man and keeps on fighting for his life.”

He’s receiving much needed support from his family, friends, wife and four children as well as people all over South Africa that’s praying for him for a speedy recovery.

“Even at Angus Buchan’s prayer day people prayed for him and we have received voice notes from people in Cape Town who have been on radio asking for listeners to pray for his recovery.”

On April 28 Janita’s worst fear was confirmed when the hospital phoned to inform her their medical aid limit of R230 000 had been exceeded and that there were no more funds available.

The family is not financially stable to pay for the medical costs and urgently needs financial assistance to make sure Rudi gets the best possible care.

He is in an induced coma at the moment because of being so weak. His wife is terrified he will be transferred to a state hospital in his condition.

“He already had two surgeries done and the doctor said that if he did not get the proper care he needed he would not survive. We really need the community or anyone that might be able to donate any money towards Rudi to assist us.”
