Youth turns over a new leaf

Young people leave drug habit.

On May 20 community members came out in numbers to support a drug rehabilitation event staged by Skeem National Rehabilitation Chamber (Skeem) in Vusumuzi section.

Co-founder of Skeem Bongane Mabunda said on the day they invited Green House Prison Ministries, which he said was established by ex-convicts and aimed at ensuring that former inmates don’t go back to crime after their release from prison.

“The youth in our care as a drug rehabilitation centre were involved in crime before they took up our programme and those crimes would have led them to prison. That is why we brought in ex-inmates and former drug users to encourage them to stay out of prison by staying away from drugs.”

He said this encourages the young people not to relapse once they complete the rehabilitation programme.

Keynote speakers for the day were Bheki Myende and Thoko Hlophe from Prison Ministries, and life coach David Arends.

Skeem National Rehabilitation Chamber is situated opposite Zniko shopping centre.

“We appeal to businesses and Tembisa residents to support this initiative by providing donations to enable the centre to run smoothly,” said Mabunda.

He said the young people at Skeem are taught skills that can be of great use to the community.
