Young people leave school at some point and they have to make career choices and find their true purpose in life.
Choosing the wrong career can be time-wasting and can lead to a frustrating life that is not fulfilling.
But looking at what one loves doing can help identify a career path that can be both lucrative and enjoyable.
Libuseng Mokotleng wanted to be a nurse because she loved helping people, especially the sick.
She said, due to financial constraints, she could not pursue the career and, after five years of looking for work after matric, she managed to get a job as an assistant at a surgery and worked there for a further five years.
“I liked that job because it was close to what I really wanted to do, which is working in the health industry as a nurse,” said Mokotleng.
But she said the job did not pay enough to enable her to study part-time and so she decided to leave it and look for another one.
She was then unemployed for two years.
“One day I went to a business expo where I found an estate agent company that explained to me what the industry entails. I got interested and loved the fact that I could be my own boss and work at my own pace, determining my own salary.”
She said at first it was difficult finding people who were interested in the houses she sold.
“People didn’t know me and I had to do a thorough marketing of myself as an estate agent.
“I had to be out there every day looking for business and it was difficult because I had a fear of rejection.”
She said today she loves and enjoys her career as an estate agent, and thanks her boss for giving her regular motivation.
She learnt how to approach customers and she says her job is an ongoing challenge.
“To have the qualities of a good estate agent, you must be loyal, trustworthy and know how to handle customers.
“You must give good customer service all the time.”
She said the job of a property agent is all about marketing and your success depends on your love for business.
“This is a fulfilling career but one day I want to buy my own franchise in the property industry and be completely on my own,” she says.
