The year 2017 marks the 4th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, which started on May 8 all over the world.
The theme for the week was #SlowDown_Save Lives.
The campaign focused on reducing speed and finding intervention measures to address this key risk factor.
It commenced at Phumulani Mall last Saturday and included a motorcade involving the various transport modes – such as bikers, cyclists, car spinners, drifters, racers, scholar transport and Taxi Association members among others – and drove off to Vosloorus Stadium promoting #SlowDown.
The event aimed to encourage motorists to #Slowdown and observe speed limits on the road.
Speaking at Phumulani Mall, Chikunga said it is reported that speed contributes to around one-third of all fatal road traffic crashes in high-income countries, and up to half of all fatal road traffic crashes in low- and middle-income countries.
“The UN Road Safety Collaboration acknowledges that countries successfully reducing road traffic deaths have done so by prioritising safety when managing speed.
“Road Safety remains a political priority and thus can only be seen within our quest for the protection and affirmation of human life. By uniting against dangerous and irresponsible behaviour as communities we are defending the fundamental rights of our people,” said Chikunga.
The day’s programme concluded with a Top 4 Soccer and Netball tournament for the road users at Vosloorus Stadium.
