Chess attracts young people in Tembisa

Tembisa residents get to play chess.

Young and old came out to relax and enjoy the Tembisa Chess Tour on Saturday.

Tembisa Chess Club Co-founder, Phill Mngomezulu, said the event was a success even though they only had a small number of chess enthusiasts taking part.

“We had about 20 chess players but that is very good start. Of course we are hoping to grow the attendance and want to popularise the game in Tembisa,” said Mngomezulu.

“Tembisa Chess Tour kicked off on June 3 at Sedibeng Park and it will proceed to Thafeni Park on June 10. We will host games every Saturday and invite all Tembisan chess players to come out in their numbers to support the initiative,” he added.

He then went on to explain that the event accommodated players of different ages and that young and old were most welcome.

“Top performer for the day was 24-year-old Mvuyisi Nkambule from Sedibeng who contributed his prize money to help fund the Tembisa Chess Tour’s course.”

Nkambule said he supported the tour’s vision and efforts to develop a strong chess culture in Tembisa to take children off the streets.
