Trio hopes to bring back kwaito

Young people want community to support their talent.

In Tembisa there are many backyard music studios which are operated in secluded shacks.

Numerous talents are nurtured in these hidden studios and they need to be exposed for everyone to appreciate the youth’s creativity.

Ama-Lover Boys is one of many groups that struggle for exposure in the music industry.

The group is made up of three young people: Errens “Njimo” Malesa, Kgathatso “KG” Matlou and Victor “Uncle” Maloka.

Asked how they started the kwaito group, Maloka said theirs has been a long journey.

“I met KG in one of the studios here ekasi and he was very shy, but he had passion. I encouraged him and told him that he could do this,” said Maloka.

He said in 2008 they recorded their first album which was not successful and as a result they parted ways when Maloka got full-time employment.

“I continued doing music and in 2010 I met Errens. We pushed a second album and began performing at events and people started to notice us. We started getting bookings,” said Matlou.

He said in 2015 Maloka came back to join the group and now they specialise in kwaito as their chosen music genre.

Their current album has 11 tracks and they are doing their own distribution.

“We want to take this further and get major music deals. We also want to have our own professional music studio,” said Matlou.

He said their kwaito sound is a new and improved version of the genre, but it still retains its roots in old school kwaito.

“Our sound is fresh and contemporary and we dare music lovers to take a listen and they will judge for themselves”.
