Readers share their views rapists’ punishment

We asked our readers if convicted rapists and paedophiles should be castrated.

There has been talk in Tembisa about a suitable punishment for those found guilty of rape and other sexual offences. We asked our readers if convicted rapists and paedophiles should be castrated.

Rex Matibidi says,”We need men who will protect and support our children and women in the community – not rapists. It is both disgraceful and a sign of disrespect to have such men in our communities. I think they should be castrated as these types of men are nothing but a virus that condemns the future generations of this country and kills our women.”
Sonnyboy Makhafola states, “I feel castration could potentially be a good idea and serve as a big example to those criminals who are terrorising people in the community. These criminals do as they like because harsh punishment such as castration is not supported by the justice system of this country. So many children are abused, raped and killed. I am tired of hearing about such horrifying news on media. A harsh punishment should be implemented to protect these powerless children and women.”
Thabo Mametja says,”I feel castration is wrong but I do not support what rapists do to our children and women. It is inhumane and heartless to force yourself on someone. I think rapists and paedophiles deserve to be locked away for their actions. And when we talk about castration we must also look into the fact that some people report false cases and innocent people are jailed for wrong reasons. The wrong people are arrested while perpetrators walk freely on the street.”
Kabelo Maage says,”Castrating someone is cruel and an unusual punishment. It is akin to killing our nation and denying someone to have children. Rapists deserve to remain behind bars for life as long as they have been found guilty. Parents should act more responsibly with regards to the safety and whereabouts of their children. Most children who are abused and raped on a daily basis, come from ignorant families who spend time drinking alcohol, or leave children at home alone.”
