Zone 8 children take part in Ms and Mr June 16 beauty pageants

About 40 young girls and boys aged five to 20 years took part in the beauty pageant

For the first time ever in Winnie Mandela Zone Eight, a beauty pageant was held for the children on June 16.

Marriam Monene, a dynamic local businesswoman and community builder, said she always wanted to mentor children in the area of Winnie Mandela and to encourage them to participate in activities that will help identify their talents.

“I’ve been planning this type of event for our children, but with no support,” said Monene.

About 40 young girls and boys aged five to 20 years took part in Ms and Mr June 16 beauty pageants and all walked away with fruit hampers, including snacks and sweets.

Young people aged 16 to 20 years were seen showing off their talent in the Winnie Mandela Zone Eight Miss June 16 beauty pageant.

The beauty pageants were divided into four categories, giving all the children a chance to showcase their modelling talent.

The event was also part of celebrating June 16 and some of the young people competed dressed in school uniform.

In black and white school uniform, Mirriam Monene is joined by her organisers and judges.

Local ward 3 councillor Dorcas Makwela, several parents and other community members supported the event.

Monene is hoping to host yet another spectacular beauty pageant in September for Ms and Mr Spring.

“My aim is to promote an active lifestyle, drive and self-confidence into our children. It is every parent’s dream to see their children chasing after their dreams and goals. I want to see these children have the confidence to go after what they really want and just being able to put themselves out there,” added Monene.

“We need children who will become an inspiration in everyday life, not drug addicts, criminals and many other negative aspects,” said Monene.

In black and white school uniform, Mirriam Monene is joined by all the models, judges and people who helped her organise the event.

“Parents should really support Monene in this type of event; maybe one day we will have Miss South Africa from Zone Eight,” said Makwela.

The event was sponsored by Masa NGO, which is based in the area.
