Counterfeit goods, drugs worth millions seized at airport

The two passengers were identified as drug mules and taken for X-rays

SARS customs officials intercepted 10 bags and three boxes with counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R4.2-million at OR Tambo International Airport over the recent long weekend.

On June 15, three passengers from Hong Kong via Nairobi were linked to 10 bags and three boxes filled with designer wristwatches, footwear and tracksuits.

In separate incidents on June 18, two passengers from Sao Paolo to Johannesburg, who swallowed 49 cocaine bullets each – with a combined weight of 0.820kg and valued at an estimated R235 914 – were intercepted, while a third was linked to three abandoned parcels that weighed 3kg and had an estimated value of R863 000.

The two passengers were identified as drug mules and taken for X-rays that revealed foreign objects in their abdomen, while the third was found to have marks from a body wrap.
