There is basically no crime in Glen Marais – police report

In Glen Marais, the most problematic crimes include common assault, housebreaking, car theft and theft out of a car

THE Kempton Police sector vehicles’ phone numbers are currently out of order.

This was revealed in a police report at a May community crime meeting arranged by ward councillor Jaco Terblanche.

The meeting was held at the Old Apostolic Church on Ilala Street to discuss crime concerns in Glen Marais.

Kempton Police’s Vispol (visible policing) head, Col Steven Moodley, was also present to present a police report on crime in Glen Marais.

According to Terblanche, the police report stated that “compared to the rest of Kempton, there is basically no crime in Glen Marais”.

“The police were basically comparing crime patterns in Kempton and yet again the highest crime rates came from the CBD,” Terblanche explained.

In Glen Marais, the most problematic crimes include common assault, housebreaking, car theft and theft out of a car.

“These crimes usually happen on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the day up until 10pm.”

For emergency situations it was recommended that residents call 10111 first and get a reference number. If unable to get through to that number, call the nearest police station.

“People can also ask for the relief commander or someone in the charge office. Moodley said the sector vehicle phones were out of order.”

Police are also in need of extra hands with regards to community patrolling. During the day, police officials conduct patrols but are in need of assistance from the community during night time.

Before the meeting was adjourned, Terblanche updated the community regarding tariff increases, the IDP (Integrated Development Plan) and money allocated to infrastructure maintenance and upgrades in the suburb.

“There will be an upgrade of the park area in Ouhout Street, Glen Marais, which will be converted into an outdoor gym and play area for children.”

Monument Road will also be upgraded. The section between Braambos Street and Dann Road will become double lanes with curbs in the middle. Every 200m will have a circle/roundabout.

Phase 3 upgrades of Quinine Street will also begin soon.

If anyone would like to get involved with patrolling, contact Moodley on 071 675 8888.
