THE chief of police arrested two drunk drivers in the central business district on Sunday morning while on his way to the office.
Spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Metro Police, chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, said the incident happened at around 9.40am at the intersection of Voortrekker Road and Casuarina Street. The drivers were involved in a collision at the intersection.
“I had just stopped at the intersection alongside a white Fiat Sandero with the traffic light not in our favour, when suddenly a grey VW Golf rammed into the back of the Fiat Sandero”, the chief of police Isaac Mapiyeye, said.
“I immediately alighted from my vehicle and to my surprise both the drivers seemed like they had taken one glass too many.”
Kempton precinct officers were summoned to the scene with an alcometer and the chief’s suspicions were confirmed as both drivers registered above the legal limit.
Both the 35-year-old male driver in the silver VW Golf and the 59-year-old female driver in the Sandero were taken to Tembisa Hospital for drawing of blood and subsequently detained at Kempton Park Police Station on charges of suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
