Father’s Day in South Africa was celebrated on June, 18 to recognise the contribution that fathers make towards the well-being of their children.
In Tembisa, Mthambeka residents put up a tent in one of their streets to observe the day by showing appreciation for the role played by men in the society and in the lives of children.

The event’s co-organiser and also a father, Smanga Sibanyoni, said such celebrations are rare in the township.
“We did not want to celebrate the day by only hosting a party. We wanted to create a platform to engage with fathers on male issues that may subsequently affect their families and their children,” said Sibanyoni.
He said the issues included men’s fear of testing for many health complications like prostate cancer, lung cancer and HIV.
“We also encouraged responsible sexual behaviour and discouraged the abuse of women and children,” said Sibayoni.
Men were encouraged to have regular check-ups at least once a year.
“They must follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly. We also encouraged a professional medical consultation for male problems as opposed to alternative bogus doctors who promise to solve health problems for men.”
He said the day was a success and he thanked everyone who attended to make Tembisa fathers feel special.
“It was the first time we celebrated Father’s Day in this fashion and it is definitely not the last as it is going to be an annual event. We are happy to see men swallow their pride and share their common issues. Fathers and husbands are not setting out to hurt women but at times they feel helpless when they are emotionally abused and eventually react in an inappropriate manner. Be considerate towards the fathers and husbands; be there for them because they also need your support,” said Sibayoni.
