Gogo Sobho’ s soup kitchen feeds 71 children
“I started with few children coming in to eat, today I feed around 71 children,"
There are many children in Tembisa who do not get enough food due to many reasons.
To assist those in need, Liala Nkutu, a Tembisa resident began the Leratong Feeding Scheme based at her home in 2012.
She saw the plight of malnourished children in her community and started a soup kitchen to feed hungry children in Madelakufa and Endulwini section.
Leratong means a place of love and Liala’s home is nothing less than that – a safe haven for children.
Liala was inspired to set up the soup kitchen after a revelation from God.
She said it was a way to give back to the community.
“I started with few children coming in to eat. Today I feed around 71 children,” said Liala.
The children love Liala’s soup and she has earned herself the title ‘Gogo Sobho’.
Liala believes that her children will be the ones that break the cycle of poverty in their families.
“Some of the children I started with in 2012 are now teenage girls in Grade 10 and 11 and I always tell them to study hard so that they will be able to look after themselves when they are grown-up and alone,” explained Liala.
The soup kitchen is supported by the Thembi Mall Pick n Pay – the managers provide her with all the ingredients to make the soup for the children.
She said some members of the community also support her through their generous donations of food containers and clothes.
Liala runs her soup kitchen every Thursday afternoon from 1.30pm to 3pm.
One of the challenges Liala faces is the cooking.
She said she finds it difficult to cook every day because of her age.
Liala said it would be great if the mothers and young women in the community could volunteer to make the soup
Her hopes are that the community can take the feeding scheme to greater heights.
