Several of the hospital nurses who attended the event took part in drum majorette marches from Flint Mazibuko Street to the hospital grounds, where the ceremony was held.

While marching, the nurses were backed by members from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and Emergency Medical Services.

The Tembisa Hospital theme for 2017 was, ‘Nursing a voice to lead and achieving a sustainable development goal’.

The event was opened by the hospital CEO, Lekopane Mogaladi.

Wilfred Mothwane, the deputy director of the nursing department, said they wanted to raise awareness of the important role nurses play in communities.

“Our nurses need to go back to the basics of nursing, especially our moral values, respect, caring, honesty, attitude and commitment – because the conditions that nurses work under today is much better than in previous years. They should make sure that they work hard and gain respect from the community by respecting the community. Nurses cannot be recognised by society if they don’t respect them,” added Mothwane.

Mothwane said the event did not interfere with hospital services on the day.

“These are off-duty and night shift nurses attending the event,” he said.

Guest speaker Dr Z Mkhwanazi said nurses are the servants of the public.

Several of the hospital nurses were also awarded with certificates and more than 100 nurses from the hospital received tokens of appreciation from various sponsors.

Mogaladi encouraged the nurses to view themselves as important members of society.
