According to one of the victims, he and a friend stayed behind after a fitness training session at an open field on Salixterrace Street in Edleen just after 7pm when the double hijacking happened.
Five armed men surprised them when they jumped out of a blue Audi A4 and held them at gunpoint before fleeing with their vehicles.
Fitness coach Steven Coetzer told EXPRESS, “I was walking my friend to his vehicle and suddenly we saw five armed men jump out of the Audi. They made us lie on the ground and took our cellphones, wallets and car keys.”
Coetzer said the sixth suspect was the getaway driver. He stayed in the car, keeping the engine running. The armed men jumped into the victims’ 2005 silver Ford Fiesta and 1984 red VW Golf.
“When they left we got up and chased them with a neighbour’s vehicle onto Modderfontein Road where we were slowed down by a traffic light. We watched them skip one traffic light after another. At that point they split up and we followed the Audi to Alexandra but it managed to lose us,” said Coetzer.
Coetzer’s VW Golf has a sunroof and the registration number is BJK 590 GP. The Ford Fiesta’s number is SHW 958 GP.
Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, confirmed a case of hijacking had been opened. People with information can call 011 391 1814/5 or 08600 10111.
