Mechanic critically injured as car falls on him at Benoni dealership

Nick Dollman of Netcare 911 said Great North Road was closed for about 10 minutes as the helicopter landed

TRAFFIC on Great North Road in Benoni was brought to a standstill this morning to allow a medical helicopter to land to pick up a seriously injured mechanic.

An employee of VW Princess Benoni on Great North Road was seriously injured when a vehicle apparently fell on top of him at about 10am.

Ben Koch, the dealer principal at the outlet, confirmed the incident to Benoni City Times but did not want to reveal further information at this stage.

Nick Dollman of Netcare 911 said Great North Road was closed for about 10 minutes as the helicopter landed.

Dollman said paramedics attended to the 41-year-old mechanic who had sustained severe injuries.

He said reports from the scene were unclear as to what had happened; whether the car fell from the lift or if the lift itself had fallen. Due to the seriousness of his injuries and the specialised care that would be required, it was decided to airlift the victim from the scene to an awaiting specialised trauma unit.
