Store manager Veronika Hanekom said she saw one of the social media posts created by active community members, Jolandi Ford and Renee Erasmus, about what had happened. The store decided to help.
On July 4, the family was invited to collect a trolley of groceries worth R4 000 and a shopping voucher to the value of R2 000 at Van Riebeeck Park Pick n Pay.

Erasmus said: “I am very proud of the community of Van Riebeeck Park. I have only been residing here for two years and I have never seen such a caring community of people. I want to thank all the people who made the generous donations and EXPRESS for rejuvenating the collections after the story was published.”
Natasha van Rooyen and her granny Marie Peacock said words could not express the joy the people of Van Rieebeck Park brought to them by helping them in their time of need.
“As a family, we want to thank all the people and AfriForum for paying our deposit and first month’s rent at our new place and for also settling our annual school fees. We are grateful to Pick n Pay Van Rieebeck Park, Hoërskool Jeugland and Laerskool Van Riebeeck Park, Evangelies Gereformeerde Kerk Van Riebeeck Park and Edleen Butchery,” said one of the daughters, also Natasha.
The girls’ mother could not be at the collection at Pick n Pay because she works two jobs but she sent her gratitude to all the people and businesses that helped her family.
