R511 to be upgraded at a cost of R150-million

The project will see the construction of bus bays at selected intersections in support of public transport

A 12km section of the R511 (William Nicol Extension) will be upgraded at a cost of R150-million.

MEC for Roads and Transport Dr Ismail Vadi said the project would last 18 months.

Vadi said, “the R511 links Gauteng with the North West Province and serves as a major inter-provincial route from Midrand towards the neighbouring province”.

He added that a section of the road was rehabilitated some years ago while the current project will upgrade the remaining 12km of the road network, linking it to the neighbouring province.

“This is expected to improve travelling times and ensure safety for road users, among them, cyclists and pedestrians.”

The project entails, among others, the re-surfacing of the remaining Gauteng section of the road; construction of edge beams; reinstating of road markings and traffic signs; replacing or repairing of damaged guardrails; cleaning of road reserve and cutting overgrown grass; cleaning and repairing drainage structures; and constructing new drainage structures.

In addition, the project will see the construction of bus bays at selected intersections in support of public transport and passenger convenience.

Affected communities along the route will be given preference in relation to sub-contracting and recruitment of labour with specific focus on women, youth and people living with disabilities.

Motorists can expect delays during the course of construction.
