A simple tip off to the Ivory Park SAPS and a quick response thereafter has resulted in the arrest of a local man for possession of a firearm and one round of live ammunition.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, members of the Ivory Park crime prevention responded to a tip-off at Extension 2 Taxi Rank, Ivory Park where someone was heard and seen firing a shot in the air.
“The police rushed to the scene only to find that the suspect had already left. They were then directed to his place of residence where the firearm was found after thorough searching. The 40-year-old suspect failed to produce a license when asked and he was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Matimulane.
The Ivory Park SAPS Station Commander, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, was particularly pleased with this tip-off and the outcome afterwards.
“Our communities are replete with illegal firearms which are, sadly, being used as weapons with which to rob and traumatise our people. By giving us this valuable piece of information the person has contributed immensely in withdrawing an illegal firearm from circulation and, as such, giving us an opportunity to investigate if it has been used in the commission of another crime elsewhere,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.
