Ivory Park police have opened a case of child neglect after a newborn baby was found wrapped in plastic in an open veld by a member of the public in Ebony Park on Wednesday night.

According to Ivory Park SAPS communication officer Captain Bernard Matimulane they received a tip-off about the baby who was still alive and rushed to the scene. “The baby was immediately taken to Tembisa Hospital by an ambulance,” said Capt. Matimulane.

The station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, was shocked by this act of cruelty and appealed to anyone with information to assist the police to track down the mother.

“Regardless of the circumstance of the parent there is no justification for anyone to subject an innocent life to such conditions. Gauteng has many homes for abandoned kids and the mother could have used one of those if she was in some form of difficulty,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.

The police have since opened a case which was handed over to the police’s family violence, child protection and sexual offences Unit for further investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the case is welcome and encouraged to contact the local police or call 08600 10111
