AN alert reported on a street crime group led to the discovery of metres of stolen cables.
The alert was sent out on a Rhodesfield Street WhatsApp group on July 21.
A member of the group told EXPRESS they received an alert for help after midnight.
“We got a tip-off at about 1am that someone had broken into one of our neighbour’s houses. A group of about five of us went to investigate at about. Just then someone said there was something happening at the railway line,” the resident explained.

When the group walked towards the railway line, they spotted some guys carrying stuff across the railway line.
“When they saw us approaching they started to run. We ran after them but they got away.”
That’s when they came across 15 cables, each about three metres long, neatly packed away in the veld.
“It was as if the cables had been stolen before and they had hidden them away in the grass to fetch them later, which is probably what they were doing at the time when we walked towards them.”
It took three police vans to remove all the cables.
Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed the cables were taken in by the police.
No suspects were arrested.
