Get down and dirty every Saturday

All hands were on deck as the young and old got their hands dirty

ALL hands were on deck when the neighbourhood watch for Sector 2.1 gathered more than 30 volunteers to clean Van der Walt and Commissioner streets on November 11.

Volunteers, both young and old, took to the streets with refuse bags and other equipment. They got their hands dirty by picking up litter lining both streets.

The clean-up was organised by Elbie Orffer, public relations officer of the watch. She came up with the idea and said the clean-up drive took place between 2pm and 5pm.

“The idea is not only about cleaning, it is also aimed at getting the community together and making new friends. But, we cannot do this alone, so we need more hands and sponsors. We hope to see other areas doing the same,” Orffer added.

During the clean-up, Orffer said volunteers were cheered by other residents for their work. She said the campaign would continue on Saturdays and more volunteers and residents are welcome to join.

“We also need more sponsors,” she added.

Orffer said when finished cleaning, cleaners were rewarded for their participation with boerewors rolls and refreshments.

“Those who belong to the Sector 2.1 area and want to come help clean with us between 2pm and 5pm, can join the campaign by calling me on 084 675 7944,” said Orffer.
