WATCH: 11 people escape from house fire on Venter Street
When he went back to his room, he saw huge flames and ran
ELEVEN people escaped from a house fire on Venter Street near Kempton Park central business district on Friday evening.
The house caught fire after a hotplate was apparently left unattended. There were no injuries.
Most of the contents of the house burnt to ashes, including a motorcycle.
One tenant, who wanted to remain anonymous, said another tenant was cooking on a hotplate and left it unattended to go to the bathroom for a few minutes.
“When he went back to his room, he saw huge flames and ran. He could not save any of his property.

“The flames were too strong and rapidly spread to other parts of the house. He only had time to alert everyone in the house to vacate the premises.
“We believe the motorcycle may have fueled the flames,” the tenant said.
Juliet Nyamadzavo, another resident on Venter Street, said: “I heard people screaming and then saw flames coming through the roof of the house.
“Unfortunately, there was not much we could do as the fire was too strong. Everyone was just keeping a safe distance.”
