Conservation society releases 2018 calendar
The new calendar has again been supported by AEL Mining Services
MODDERFONTEIN Conservation Society’s highly popular wall calendar for 2018 has been released.
The new calendar has again been supported by AEL Mining Services and features three beautiful watercolour paintings of heritage buildings in Modderfontein.
These are:
• The original weather station for the Transvaal (1896-1948) in Moddercrest Office Park.
• The Dynamite Company Museum at No 2 Main Street. This, and No 1, next door, were the first residential homes to be built in Modderfontein in 1895.
• No 1 Antwerp Road on the corner of Harley Street, which housed the SA Constabulary’s armoury at the end of the South African War.
The calendar has space for each date for noting appointments, making it not only visually attractive, but also practical and useful.
The artist, Ken England, is a mechanical engineer who came to South Africa in the mid-1970s to work for AECI. He and his wife Joan lived in Lakeside and developed a deep love of Modderfontein.
He is an enthusiastic conservationist who loves walking and birdwatching. Ken is one of three honorary life members of Modderfontein Conservation Society. He took up watercolour painting when he moved into Modderfontein’s Thornhill Manor Retirement Village.
His watercolours give just an inkling of the interesting heritage that exists in the area.
Supplies of the calendar are now available and are on sale at Modderfontein Post Office for just R25. The post office is temporarily situated in a shipping container between the Shell garage and Flamingo Dam.
