COMMUNITY members took justice into their own hands when they assaulted a man who was allegedly involved in an attempted robbery near Kempton Park Taxi Rank.
Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, said the crime prevention unit responded swiftly after receiving information about fighting near the taxi rank on Pretoria Road on Thursday morning around 10am.
“Upon their arrival, they noticed a group of people fighting. When they saw the police, the group dispersed in different directions. One person was found with slight injuries to his head,” Mtshali said.
Enquiring about what was happening, officers were told the injured person was involved in an attempted robbery. Upon searching the injured man, a firearm and four rounds of ammunition were found.
Further investigations established the firearm was reported stolen at Olifantsfontein SAPS in November.
The 27-year-old man will face a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
