WATCH: Burst pipe floods Monument Rd business entrance – again

Ward councillor says infrastructure must be replaced.

The owners of Sound Experience on Monument Road are facing water damage for the fourth time in three years after a pipe burst early Wednesday morning, January 31.

The damage left the entrance and parking area of the business flooded with water.

Owner Sandra McGill saw the damage at around 6.20am and estimated that the burst happened during the night. She called the City of Ekurhuleni about the issue and was told it was being escalated.

According to her, about 500 square metres of paving was damaged. “Last time this happened we had about seven weeks of utter mess,” she said.

The damage will also affect her business. “People can’t get in or out. Who would want to walk through this water and get their shoes covered in mud?”

Laurence Nkosi, who has worked at Sound Experience for nine years, placed a wooden crate with planks in front of the entrance for customers to walk over.

McGill added that water damage such as this was unacceptable, especially when parts of the country are drought-stricken.

In November last year, Sound Experience faced water damage to such an extreme that a small sinkhole formed in front of the business. McGill’s son Robert fell into the hole while inspecting the damage.

According to ward councillor Jaco Terblanche, the infrastructure in Kempton Park is 50 years old and needs to be replaced.

“Air pressure in the pipelines builds up, which causes them to burst. The pipes at Sound Experience, for example, have started to rot. I am working on this issue to have the current infrastructure in the area replaced.”
