Children colour their hair for cancer awareness
Little ones also participated in a colouring-in competition.
Adele de Klerk, owner of a daycare centre in Birch Acres, is no stranger to cancer.
“I lost a colleague to it and know many people are effected by it,” she told Express.
The battle against cancer is clearly close to De Klerk’s heart and it is therefore no surprise that her Grace Day and Aftercare nursery schools, one in Birch Acres and one in Alberton, held a spray-a-thon on February 5. The event saw little cuties colouring their hair in bright shades to fight the big ‘C’.
De Klerk estimates the children raised about R2 500, which will be donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).
Hair wasn’t the only thing being coloured, as the children also participated in a colour-in competition. The pictures included images of sunblock to make children aware of the dangers of overexposure to the sun.
Little Liviwe Jokani and Kgolofelo Mthabini emerged as the champions of this competition.
De Klerk added that, as the children are too young to fully grasp the issue of cancer, the event was also to celebrate life.
“The children had fun and we also celebrated their health. Good health and caring for those around you is what truly matters.”
