The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, is deeply disturbed by the senseless murder of an elderly woman at her mealie field near Tswelopele Extension Eight.
The 88-year-old was found dead by her family on February 10 just a few metres from her field.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Capt Bernard Matimulane, late on February 9, the old woman’s family became increasingly worried when she failed to arrive home at the usual time.
“The search commenced early that evening but they only managed to find some of her belongings. Then, on Saturday the family went out again and that was when they found her, with signs that she may have been strangled with her headscarf. Police experts were quickly summoned to the scene to gather evidence,” said Matimulane.
Ngcobo is calling on anyone with information regarding the murder to come forward.
A case of murder has been opened at the Ivory Park SAPS and investigations into this incident are underway.
“We are struggling to understand what exactly the reason for the murder of this octogenarian was. All law-abiding residents must condemn this cowardly act and work with the police to bring whoever is responsible to face the full might of the law,” said Ngcobo.
Ngcobo further said that the elderly, like women and children, remain vulnerable to many forms of violence and the only way to put this scourge under control is through eternal vigilance.
