Hijacked truck with diesel worth R300 000 found in Benoni

The truck driver was thrown out of the vehicle in Kempton Park.

The driver of an articulated truck transporting diesel worth over R300 000 was thrown out of the vehicle in Kempton Park early on Tuesday morning.

He reported the matter to the police after which the truck was recovered in Benoni only hours later with its load still intact.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesperson, said equestrian unit members received information about the truck’s location from Tracker SA around 5.30am.

The diesel tanker was on its way from Mozambique en route to Johannesburg when it was hijacked on the N12 in Delmas around 2.30am.

“The metro police acted swiftly on the information and with the assistance of the GPS co-ordinates they were able to locate the hijacked tanker on Tom Jones Street in Benoni, with no suspects in sight,” Kgasago said.

“Evidence on the scene pointed to the hijackers having attempted to unhook the trailers but were apparently spooked off and decided to abandon their nefarious deeds. The recovered vehicle was later handed over to the owner.”
