The accused showed no remorse and denied having killed her mother.
The words of Judge Ruby Matthys before sentencing a Glen Marais woman to life imprisonment for killing her mother.
Lerato Hendrietta Monamodi (33) was sentenced in the South Gauteng High Court on Tuesday, exactly a year and a day after murdering her mother, Refiloe Rebecca Monamodi (53) at her Glen Marais home on March 5 last year.
Monamodi suffocated her paralysed mother by putting a plastic bag over her head and then dragging her into the family swimming pool where she left her to die.
In passing sentence, Matthys found the accused had intention to kill her mother out of greed. Her mother, who was an advocate by profession, received compensation through the Road Accident Fund following an accident which left her severely handicapped.
Instead of caring for her, she just kept on demanding money.
The judge further found Monamodi put her six-year-old child through severe trauma. He witnessed his grandmother being killed by his mother and also had to testify against her.
The state, represented by Adv Sifiso Khumalo, commended all the witnesses and investigating officer Sgt Jason Bramdaw for the sterling work which led to the conviction and sentence.
