Child allegedly raped by mom’s Ivory Park boyfriend

Incidents such as this are a painful reminder of why we as the community need to be vigilant all year round

A 23-year-old man from Ivory Park has been arrested on April 10 for the alleged rape of his girlfriend’s daughter.

The Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, said the victim is only four years old.

“The suspect’s alleged indiscretions surfaced after women from the same address, renting a room adjacent to the couple was became concerned when the child spent hours on end in the room, and sometimes they heard her crying. They gathered together and requested an old woman to check the child and they discovered that she had been violated. Upon probing further the women learned that the live-in boyfriend was allegedly responsible,” added Matimulane.

Matimulane further said it is not yet clear when this rape took place but this will form part of the investigations to be handled by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit of the SAPS, Ekurhuleni North Cluster.

Ivory Park SAPS station head Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo is deeply disturbed and horrified by this incident.

He has sent his gratitude to the women and neighbours of the child, whose observations and parental instincts have probably prevented what could have been a long horror story for the child.

“Incidents such as this are a painful reminder of why we as the community need to be vigilant all year round. I am grateful that, despite the pain that has been inflicted on the child, the intervention by the tenants and the neighbours have put an end to the child’s misery,” said Ngcobo.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on April 11 to answer to a charge of rape.
