The shootout at East Rand Mall on Friday afternoon did not happen as a result of an attempted robbery.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson, Capt Mavela Masondo, police were following up on information regarding five suspects wanted for murder and were informed the five would be at the mall.
Masondo confirmed to IOL that Gauteng police had launched a manhunt for three murder suspects following the shootout.
Masondo denied the shootout was a result of an attempted robbery, despite reports claiming so.
One of the suspects was wounded during the shootout as well as a security guard, who died at the scene.
