East Rand Mall shooters to face additional charges

Security company comments on the incident

Police have arrested two suspects and recovered an unlicensed firearm after a shootout at East Rand Mall on Friday.

A security officer from the mall was shot and fatally wounded during the shootout, while a female victim was hit by a stray bullet and airlifted to hospital in a serious but stable condition, the police said in a statement.

Police were following up on information of wanted murder suspects believed to be at East Rand Mall. It is alleged that police spotted and approached the suspects with the intention of effecting an arrest.

A shootout ensued between the police and the suspects, ending up with one suspect shot and injured, another suspect arrested while three others evaded arrests by running away.

Police recovered a firearm suspected to have been used by the suspects during the shootout.

The escaped suspects are being sought, while the arrested suspects will appear in court soon to face additional charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

In the meantime, Wahl Bartman, CEO of Fidelity Security Group, confirmed that while the police were apprehending an alleged murder suspect in the mall. The suspect’s partners opened fire and in the ensuing shootout a Fidelity security guard was killed and a female shopper critically wounded.
