Ivory Park SAPS is investigating a case of car hijacking, attempted murder and sexual assault after a couple was robbed of a vehicle in Ebony Park on April 21.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the two, boyfriend and girlfriend, were sitting in the former’s vehicle, which was parked in front of the gate on Saturday night when they were surprised by three men, one of whom had a firearm.
“It is alleged that the robbers instructed the couple to move to the backseat of the vehicle and the boyfriend reportedly refused. He was shot in the leg and they were forced into the back seat and driven to President Park, Midrand, where they were dumped. But before they were dumped one of the robbers is alleged to have threatened the woman with rape, and touched her inappropriately in the process,” said Matimulane.
He added that the man’s vehicle was taken, and a case of car hijacking, attempted murder and sexual assault was opened at the Ivory Park SAPS.
“While investigations into this matter are underway, the station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, is appealing to people to refrain from parking their vehicles in front of their yards at night and in isolated areas as this makes them easy prey to criminals.
“It is clear that there are robbers whose main targets are couples or friends sitting together in the vehicles. They know that the victims will be concentrated on each other and not be aware of what is coming their way, hence they are easy targets,” says Ngcobo.
