Man arrested for possession of R5 Rifle in Ivory Park

The vehicle which he tried to flee the scene in had been hijacked in Benoni

The station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed the arrest of a 37-year-old man in Ivory Park’s Extension Two for possession of an R5 rifle, live ammunition and a luxury sedan on April 23.

The Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, said the suspect was arrested by members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) who received valuable support from the SAPS’s Johannesburg Flying Squad.

“The vehicle which he tried to flee the scene in had been hijacked in Benoni. He was also found in possession of an R5 rifle, two magazines and 68 live rounds of ammunition. The serial numbers of the rifle have been filed off. He is from Edleen in Kempton Park,” added Matimulane.

He has been detained at the Ivory Park SAPS pending his court appearance in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.

“The arrival of the two JMPD officers in our crime-ridden area can be described as a godsend and the arrest of the suspect as a big blow to crime. We further want to thank the Johannesburg Flying Squad for rushing to the scene as we all know that policing is teamwork,” said Ngcobo.

“While the possession of an R5 and hijacked vehicle are already pointing to the seriousness of the matter at hand, the police are already hard at work trying to establish if the suspect may be linked to other crimes,” Ngcobo added.
