WATCH: KTVR Bus Service reaches out to schools

KTVR Bus Service hosted a Tembisa Learners’ Essay Presentation about the launch of the BRT Harambee buses at Destiny hotel in Bredell, Kempton Park.

On May 4, five learners from different Tembisan schools took to the stage to display their in-depth research about public transport and Harambee – a Tembisan version of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system.

The service director of public relations at KTVR Bus Service, Buti Johannes Mahlangu, said the event was one of KTVR Bus Service’s corporate social investment projects.

“Learners shared with us what they wrote in their essays about Harambee and their experiences with public transport.

“They also shared the changes they are experiencing with the newly built infrastructure and all other things that are related to the BRT,” Mahlangu explained.

Mahlangu said ten learners from each of the four selected schools wrote an essay on the subject of Harambee buses or the BRT.

Five of the forty selected learners were shortlisted and made to present their essays in front of an audience at Destiny Hotel’s conference centre.

He said the winner received R50 000 prize money which was expected to be used to further the recipient’s education.

The R50 000 first prize went to a Phomolong Secondary School leaner, Nonhlanhla Mngxati, while a Tembisa West Secondary School learner, Rachel Nozipho Mhlanga, won the second prize of R30 000. The third prize of R10 000 went to Thomas Mabane from Tembisa Secondary School.

Each of the five learners received a backpack with a laptop and other learning materials, and R20 000 went to Phomolong Secondary school for the teachers’ hard work in helping with the research.

Mahlangu said KTVR Bus service’s engagement with schools is going to be a continuous exercise which will see KTVR Bus services take other corporate social investment projects to Tembisan schools.

“KTVR Bus service colleagues really appreciate your assistance in giving back to the community. We are going to make sure that more than hundred thousand pupils know about KTVR Bus Services.

By July 8, KTVR Bus Service will be known all over Gauteng even though it only caters for Ekurhuleni,” said Solly Ledwaba from the Department of Education.

Nonhlanhla Mngxati said she did not expect the win because the competition was tough, but she thanked her teachers and her mother for helping her with the research.

“God is with us making sure that we all win. I want to thank everyone who supported me in this project,” said Rachel Nozipho Mhlanga.

Thomas Mabane said he is super excited.

“I now have a chance to pay for my registration fee next year and I would like to thank everyone who has been there with me,” said the elated Mabane.
