Celebrate Youth Day in good spirit at Esiqongweni Sports Grounds

he fun run costs R50 on the day. Be there at 6:30 am before the run which will start at 7 am.

Netball, basketball and soccer players are invited to join the second edition of Martin Matsetela Community Games to be hosted on June 16 at the Esiqongweni Sports Grounds.

According to the man founder of the games, Martin Bab Matsetela, they want to commemorate June 16 in style and remind young people about the importance of the day.

“We are calling on young people to take part in these games by showing them the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. They should play a sport instead of engaging in drugs and alcohol, or worse, crime,” said Matsetela.

He said the primary objective of this tournament is to promote the love of sports in the communities. Instead of youth consuming a lot of alcohol on the day, they should all respect and celebrate the democracy that was fought hard for by the youth of 1976 when they took a stand against the apartheid regime.

“It is appalling to see how our young people have countless excuses when they don’t want to take responsibility for their own lives and, of course, of this country. Our young people should know that June 16 is not a public holiday to engage in early romantic affairs or to take drugs, alcohol or to do crime. They should celebrate the day in a suitable manner that shows respect to our late brothers and sisters who faced the hardship of apartheid,” added Matsetela.

He said that by organising this tournament, they want to remove young people from the streets and encourage them to participate in sports.

The one-day open tournament of Martin Matsetela Community Games will start with an 8km fun run, walk and aerobics.

The fun run costs R50 on the day. Be there at 6:30 am before the run which will start at 7 am.

There is no affiliation fee for the children who are interested in taking part in the fun run and walk.
