The importance of freedom discussed at youth event

Vibrant youngsters were given a platform to discuss their ideas and beliefs.

Empowerment, growth and the true meaning of freedom.

These were only a few of the topics discussed at a youth event on June 9 at Kempton Park Civic Centre. In the spirit of youth month, the empowerment event was organised by Lindiwe Nqini, a youth ward councillor.

“We want people to come together and have a space for positive communication,” Nqini told Express.

Her hope was that local youngsters would gather to sing, dance or express themselves in any way.

“Artistic expression is a great way for the youth to communicate.”

Although only one of the 13 children chose to perform by DJing, it was a successful platform for youth discussion nevertheless.

Motivational speaker and self-proclaimed First Lady of Change Pandora Mabai kicked off the event with prayer before she briefly shared her personal story. From there, she spoke to the group about what freedom means to them.

“Freedom is the ability to wish, think or act on what you think is best for you,” she said. “If you are not free in your mind as an individual, meaning you understand who you were born to be, then you are still in prison.”

Following Mabai’s encouraging speech, local resident Koketso Mankola was given the floor to speak about the Bahá’í Faith, a religion that believes in the unity and equality of all people.

Those attending took turns to say what freedom meant to them, and how they believed they could strive towards their purpose.

Nqini’s final message to the youth of Kempton Park this youth month was: “Stay true to who you are, recognise who you are and focus on building yourself as a whole.” Local youngsters can follow her on Facebook to see when the next youth event will be.
