Seniors treated to breakfast by Pick n Pay Swazi Inn
The aim of the initiative is to help empower elderly people and break the silence of abuse
Pick n Pay of Swazi Inn continues with their pledge to look after elderly people by at least giving them a meal twice a month.
Last Wednesday, June 13, the store hosted about 50 elderly people to a free breakfast.
Speaking to the store manager, Franz Masilela, the aim of the initiative is to help empower elderly people and break the silence of abuse that they are faced with in their homes and reach out to other elders.
“This initiative is part of other valuable community projects that the store is taking part in to plough back and uplift the Tembisa and Ivory Park townships. It is our purpose to involve older people in community projects and expose them to other initiatives that they can get involved in,” said Masilela.

Masilela emphasised that in this particular event, they attracted the founder of Bophelong Fitness Club, Catherine Mathebe to come and inspire the older people about a healthy lifestyle.
When addressing the elderly, Mathebe encouraged them to consider exercising to avoid chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and high blood pressure to name a few.
“It is imperative to look after your health and the food that you eat on a daily basis. If people cannot exercise frequently on their own, there are fitness clubs in and around the township which they can join in order to exercise,” said Mathebe.

One of the elders who were part and parcel of the initiative, Moedi Johanna Nkwagatse, thanked the store for recognising elderly people and introduce them to a healthy lifestyle.
“I am proud of the Pick n Pay management and I hope they continue to make a difference in the lives of senior citizens,” added Nkwagatse.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Mokhandla said she came to the store to buy a few items without having breakfast first at her home but she was surprised by a nice breakfast in the store.
“I am really happy for what the store is doing for its customers. They are really giving us hope that life is not only about yourself but that the people surrounding you also matters,” added Mokhandla.
