Cavendish Glen Shopping Centre helps spreading the warmth

Over 450 blankets were donated to MES Kempton Park through the Cavendish Glen Shopping Centre blanket drive challenge.

Shangri-La Academy was announced as the winning school in the Cavendish Glen Shopping Centre blanket drive challenge.

The school donated 222 blankets and Aston Manor Primary School followed with 129 blankets.

The centre posted a challenge to local schools to participate in the blanket drive and as a result over 450 blankets were donated to MES Kempton Park during a recent family day at the centre.

Vionne Kapp, Francois Haasbroek and Charlean du Plessis from Haasbroek Optometrists also put up a stall and people received free eye-screenings.

“Among other things, we usually do a blood drive and I thought we should also do a blanket drive,” said Ada Botes, manager of Intercare at the centre.

“The winning school received a floating trophy and we want to continue with this challenge next year and see if another school can claim the trophy.

“We appreciated that all the tenants at the centre came on board for this initiative and helped make it a huge success. “We also appreciate everything that was donated. We also received blankets from companies and individuals.”

Among others, Botes said they also received blankets from Christian Motorcyclists Association South Africa (CMASA), Blue Gill Estate and Glen Eagle Estate.

Lancet and MES Kempton Park members also had a blast at the event. Those present included, front: Madi Rudolph, John Monareng and Gladys Masuku. Back: William Hills, Duane Edwards and Soul Malatji.

Children from Youngstars Edu-care and dancers from Aldante Dance Studios were told about the history of pizza and showed how to make their own pizzas at Domino’s Pizza.

If they were not making pizza, the Aldante Dance Studios dancers were on the dance floor entertaining the crowd. A Coca-Cola truck and a jumping castle were among the activities that ensured all members of the family had fun.

“It is wonderful to know that the community backs people who are in need. With the community’s help we can truly change the hearts of the city,” Duane Edwards, branch manager at MES Kempton Park, told Express.

Customers and supporters were also given free blood pressure tests, weight screening, checking their cholesterol levels and free eye and hearing screenings at the event.
