Kempton schools join EMPD initiative on Youth Day

The first prize was a tie between Tembisa High School and Maranatha Christian School.

Kempton Park schools joined schools from Tembisa and Edenvale on Youth Day in an initiative hosted by the metro police’s social crime prevention unit.

The objective was multi-pronged, namely, to bring together learners from different educational backgrounds to mingle and learn about each other’s educational environments, to create awareness among the youth about road safety, domestic violence, drug and substance abuse, robbery and hijacking, as well as for the learners to pit their mural skills against one another, said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the metro police.

Learners participate in the mural competition, engrossed in painting.

“The main element was the competition on painting the perimeter wall of the EMPD Junior Traffic Training Centre in Birchleigh North. Participants who actively took part were from Tembisa High School, Maranatha Christian School, Boitumelong High School, Hoërskool Jeugland and Phomolong High School,” Kgasago added.

The sponsor of the event, Orafol Safety Systems, represented by Clive Versveld, donated refreshments, medals and new traffic signs to the training centre. Participating learners and teachers were presented with goody bags and T-shirts by the metro police.

Adjudicators of the competition were Supt Nico Maritz, the wife of Ward 15 councillor Suzan van Zyl, who is a graphic art expert, and the representative of the sponsoring company, Clive Versveld.

The first prize was a tie between Tembisa High School and Maranatha Christian School. The second prize was shared by Jeugland and Phomolong, while the third prize winner was Boitumelong High School.
