Tembisa-born pilot motivates the youth
'I have done a lot of these motivational talks and the response is exceptional.'
The rate of unemployment is ever rising in South Africa and the majority of those is young people who find it difficult to get jobs.
Ward Seven Councillor Thabang Jiyane and his team work tirelessly to bring about those opportunities to ease the plight of young people.
They have partnered with Penny Setlaleleng who is a qualified pilot to stage a job opportunities expo.
Setlaleleng said her contribution will be to give a motivational talk focusing on job opportunities in the aviation industry.
“I will concentrate on why young people should choose subjects carefully.
“I will be telling a story about how I made it despite my challenges while growing,” said Setlaleleng.
She was born in Tembisa in Emkhathini and she said that is why she is passionate about helping children from different townships to identify their love in the aviation business.
“Young people don’t know how many opportunities are out there.
“I have done a lot of these motivational talks and the response is exceptional.
“I always give out my numbers to young people who want to pursue a career in aviation and I am also open for mentorship,” said Setlaleleng.
Co-organiser of the job opportunities expo Sibusiso Banda said young people’s knowledge about aviation is limited and as a result they pursue ordinary careers they see on a daily basis.
“This expo will be about aviation only but it will also touch on life challenges and the power of having a role model,” said Banda.
Setlaleleng said young people must pick the right role models.
“Having a role model channels you to take the right decisions and focus better on your goals in life,” Setlaleleng explained.
Banda said on July 18 the late former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela would have turned 100 years old.
“So on that day we will be celebrating the life of this giant who left a huge legacy.
“We want to do something that will impact society. Something beyond cleaning and painting as we usually used to celebrate Mandela Day,” Banda said.
He said stakeholders that will have stalls at the expo will be Dante Personnel, Stock Market College, Get Informed, NYDA, Ziphi Nkomo, Skills Development Corporation and the City of Ekurhuleni.
“All job seekers are advised to bring along their CVs,” said Banda.
