Woman rescued after alleged kidnapping attempt in Thembisa

Officers were conducting routine patrols in Esselen Park at about 20:00 when they heard a woman screaming for help.

Four suspects remain at large after allegedly attempting to kidnap a 27-year-old woman in Thembisa on October 7.

According to EMPD media liaison officer Thabiso Makgato, officers were conducting routine patrols on Link Road, between Esselen and Liliba near the dam, at about 20:00 when they heard a woman screaming for help.

The officers stopped and the woman ran towards the police vehicle and got inside.

She allegedly told the officers that four men travelling in a white Toyota Avanza had attempted to kidnap her.

The officers pursued the suspects, who abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Two of the suspects ran into Emfihlweni Cemetery, while the other two, including the driver, fled towards the Esselen Park area.

Makgato said the suspects allegedly opened fire at the officers during the pursuit.

The suspects managed to evade arrest in the darkness around the cemetery.

“No officers were injured and no arrests were made,” said Makgato.

A case of attempted kidnapping and attempted murder will be opened at Thembisa SAPS for further investigation.

The EMPD will work with the SAPS to trace the suspects and the vehicle.

The EMPD is appealing to anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the four men who were travelling in a white Toyota Avanza in the Thembisa area at around 20:00 to come forward.

Makgato urged community members, particularly women, to remain vigilant and avoid walking alone in isolated areas, open veld and unlit streets at night.

Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious vehicles or people to the authorities.

“We condemn the continued targeting of women by violent and ruthless criminals. The EMPD will not rest until those responsible are brought to book,” said Makgato.
