Police catch alleged Edleen killer pretending to buy his car

It appears that the accused knew his victim well.

An accused Edleen murderer was arrested on Saturday, following an undercover operation by Norkem Park SAPS.

Solomon Mahaku (46) is accused of stabbing a 37-year-old man to death with a sharp object earlier this month. The motivation behind the killing, which happened on the corner of Green Avenue and CR Swart Drive streets is not yet clear. Police investigations so far suggest the men knew each other well.

According to W/O Mahlodi Langa, acting spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, they traced Mahaku through his cellphone number, which was supplied by informants,” Langa told Express.

Officers on the case, Sgt Nkampe Rapholo and Const Miyelani Mashautane, gave Mahaku a call. They pretended to show interest in his car, which the informants told them was for sale.

“The suspect then made an appointment to meet them at a garage on Isando Road.”

Little did Mahaku know that the prospective buyers were, in fact, police members hot on his trail.

He was arrested for murder and appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s court on Monday. According to Langa, Mahaku was not granted bail.

“We will comment further when we have received the docket from the court,” he added.
