Two arrested by Ivory Park SAPS for possession of firearms

The two suspects, both males, were arrested separately during routine police patrols

Two men have been arrested in the Ivory Park policing precinct over the weekend for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The two suspects, both males, were arrested separately during routine police patrols in the Ebony Park and Kaalfontein areas on July 14 and 15.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, in the first incident, a 24-year-old man was arrested in Ebony Park in the early hours of Saturday after he was seen playing with a firearm, oblivious of the police’s presence nearby.

“The suspect was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco with five rounds of live ammunition. Preliminary investigations by the Ivory Park SAPS revealed that the firearm had been stolen somewhere in KwaZulu-Natal in 2015,” said Matimulane.

Marimulane added that in the second incident a Vosloorus man was arrested in Kaalfontein on Sunday night after he was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco with 13 rounds of live ammunition.

The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, was nothing but complimentary of the members involved.

“It is a fact that most of the robberies in our areas are executed with the use of firearms. The fact that these members braved all by arresting these two men clearly shows we are committed to fighting the crime, and chances are that our successes will improve if we are to receive more support from the community of this area,” said Ngcobo.

The two suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
