Birch Acres man (60) in desperate need of funds to stay in ICU

KAR Performance on 18 Plane Road, Spartan, will host a Dyno Day on August 5.

While a Birch Acres resident is fighting for his life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Tembisa, his family is fighting to raise enough money to keep him there.

Aviation technician Leonard Davenport (60) is in critical condition in Lenmed Zamokhule Hospital after a diabetic ulcer on his leg started affecting the rest of his body. He has no medical aid.

According to his niece, Michelle Joubert, Davenport was admitted to hospital on July 18. He is battling kidney failure, an enlarged heart, a collapsed lung and a spreading infection on his leg.

“But he is still fighting,” Joubert assured Express telephonically on Thursday.

“He looks at me when I speak to him and he squeezes my hand.”

Together with the rest of Davenport’s immediate family, Joubert managed to raise enough money to move her uncle from Tembisa Hospital to the private hospital on July 21.

“Their service has been excellent, “she said, “but we cannot financially afford to keep [Davenport] there on our own.”

She estimated the daily cost of his ICU stay totals about R15 000 a day. Davenport will have to remain in ICU for at least another two to three weeks, not to mention his rehabilitation afterwards.

To assist in their fundraising, KAR Performance on 18 Plane Road, Spartan, will host a Dyno Day on August 5. All cars are welcome to join. Sign-up starts at 8.30am and will cost R200 for two runs. Food and drinks will also be on sale and there will be a jumping castle to entertain the children.

Davenport’s progress can be followed on the Helping Len Facebook page. His family can be contacted on 081 467 2760 (Michelle) or 083 454 7153 (Sharon). Donations can be deposited to LR Davenport, Capitec bank, Savings account, Account number 1503921105, Branch code 470010.
