The DA in Ekurhuleni continues to hold the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, to account regarding the much-anticipated armoury report.
The DA has been championing the release of the report, which will detail the number of firearms in the possession of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, as well as those firearms either missing or stolen, said Clr Jaco Terblanche, DA member of the community safety oversight committee.
“This critical audit is long awaited and we will continue to pressure the mayor for its release. While we welcome his ruling to bring it to council in due course as he continues to process the report, we urge him to speedily make it available,” Terblanche said.
“At the council meeting of May 24, during a DA motion calling for a debate on the matter of urgent public importance regarding the armoury audit report, the speaker of council, alderman Patricia Kumalo, ruled that the report needed to be presented at the next council meeting.
“During the debate of the motion, the MMC of community safety, alderman Vivian Chauke, informed council that the Hawks were busy with an investigation regarding the armoury in Ekurhuleni.
“We, as the DA, hope that the correct report will be released by the mayor and not an edited version to protect certain individuals. The DA will continue to put pressure on the mayor to release the report. We believe it in the public interest to release the report.”
