Sly event organiser pulls Ekurhuleni’s name into scam

An investigation is underway to trace the organisers and if there is any official in Ekurhuleni who has consented to the usage of the City’s brand

A sly ‘event organiser’ has drawn the name of the City of Ekurhuleni into a scam to con people out of R500 to attend an entrepreneurs event.

The office of the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, has noted a poster circulating on social media about the event allegedly organised for entrepreneurs using the name of the City as a sponsor.

“The organisers allege some partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and “calls on suppliers and entrepreneurs” to partake in the event at a fee,” said Gugu Ndima from the mayor’s office on Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Masina condemns this in the strongest possible terms and an investigation is underway to trace the organisers and if there is any official in Ekurhuleni who has consented to the usage of the City’s brand.

“The City is fully committed to transparency on any information related to business and procurement. Such information is free and available to the public. The City has embarked on programmes and road shows such as NTIRHISANO, partnering with SEDA and the Gauteng Provincial Government, to raise awareness about opportunities in the City. All these activities are done at no cost to the public,” Ndima added.

“Entrepreneurship is highly encouraged and supported by the City and any organisation which seeks to exploit aspirant entrepreneurs will be exposed.”
